History of Vineyards and Wine
During its history main agricultural activity of Tenedos has been in vineyards and wine making. The first Tenedos coins minted in 550 B.C. depicts a cluster of grapes on one side.
Tenedos is the main growing region of Çavuş grapes which has a well deserved fame among consumers. Çavuş is a non-wine type grape used mainly for table consumption. In recent years many old vineyards had been reestablished with new types of grapes for producing better quality wines, and several factories modernized themselves with new equipments. Such investments have increased the wine quality drastically.
Tenedos museum’s vineyard and wine collection has been grouped under the following subjects:
1. Wines manufactured and bottled in Tenedos: Wines from 1950s till now produced by companies that has since stopped production such as Taki, Aral, Marangoz and Bağcılar Coop, as well as companies that continue to produce like Talay, Ataol, Yunatçı and Corvus, in various sizes of bottles, are on display in the wine cellar of the museum.
2. Corkscrews: 20 corkscrews in various forms, and books about corkscrews.
3. Invoices, bottle labels, corks, certificates and books: Includes a large collection of labels from both old and current wine producers.
4. Old tools and equipment used in vineyards and wine making.
5. Barrels and cases.
